Resources in Manukau -
The following is a list of what is
happening in Manukau with respect to music tuition for Manukau Youth.
The society is working towards expanding it's own operations to
increase the opportunities available in this area and is also keen
to make people aware of other resources already existing in the
community. Explore as many options as you can as there can be
a big difference in how much you pay and the type of service you get.
Kedgley Music Centre - Based at Kedgley Intermediate School with
tutors paid for by the government making lessons very reasonable. Students
must be at primary or intermediate
school level to attend due to funding regulations. A wide range of instruments
are available. This is the home of the Manukau Youth Orchestra and the conductor
Joseph Allan (and author of these pages) teaches violin and trumpet at the centre.
Contact the Kedgley Intermediate School office to get in touch with the supervisor.
Manurewa Music School - Based at Greenmeadows Intermediate School the
operation is much the same as the Kedgley Music Centre with after hours music
tuition. Contact the school office to get in touch with the supervisor.
Howick School of Music - A very large music organisation in
Howick operating quite differently from the other two Manukau organisations
above. For a full run down on services visit their web site at
www.hsm.co.nz.
High Schools - Many high schools provide music tuition programmes
which are funded by the government with lessons taught during school hours.
The selection of available instruments depends on the school and you need
to contact your high school for information about specific programmes.
Private Lessons - There are a number of private music tutors in Manukau.
Prices can vary greatly between teachers and finding a list of private teachers is
not always so easy. The above are all valid contacts as are music shops
such as Piano Traders in Mount Eden or KKB in Newmarket.
Manukau Youth Orchestra - Being part of a music group helps develop
many different music skills such as listening, rhythm, reading, theory and
interpretation. An orchestra or band should be
seen as part of the education process and enjoyment of learning an instrument.
The Accessibility Programme - This Manukau Youth Orchestra initiative is about
"Providing Affordable Tuition for Manukau Youth".
Currently the main focus of the programme is to provide stringed instrument tuition at
various intermediate schools across Manukau.
This is part of a long term strategy to increase the strength of the orchestra.
