Music Tuition

Here are some of the options available for young people in Manukau to learn music. Explore the options and consider the number of students in a class, the length of a lesson and the cost.

At Home

The best place to start and the younger the better. Try to listen to a wide range of music at home including Jazz, Funk, Latin and Classical.

You can introduce percussion instruments as soon as your baby can hit or shake something, such as a small hand drum, a tambourine, a rainbow coloured glockenspiel or hand held sleigh bells. Always check for potential choking hazards and consider some instruments may require close supervision for safety.

Later on you could introduce wind instruments such as a recorder or harmonica. Keyboard and piano are also good fun.

Recorder & Beyond

The recorder is a great instrument to start more structured learning at around six years of age. It is the right size for small hands, easy to hold, does not break easily and is cheap. In one or two years students can learn to read music and then move onto another instrument.

As with sport, young people enjoy being part of a team and learn faster, it is the same with music. If they want to be part of an orchestra then learning violin is the best choice. If they want to join their school band then clarinet, flute, saxophone and trumpet are good options.

Government Funded Music Schools
For Primary and Intermediate School Students

Government funded Music Schools are for primary and intermediate school students. They are based at Intermediate Schools, classes are held after school or on Saturday morning and a wide range of instruments are offered including violin, clarinet, flute and recorder.

Enrolment, instrument hire, books and consumeables for the year will set you back $100-$250 depending on the instrument. Contact the school to get in touch with the supervisor.

Manukau Youth Orchestra

Being part of a music group helps develop many different music skills such as listening, rhythm, reading, theory and interpretation. An orchestra or band should be seen as part of the education process and enjoyment of learning an instrument.

The orchestra provides tuition of specialised instruments, such as oboe and bassoon, where no other options are available. We also provide quality instruments for hire at nominal charges to ensure learning an instrument is accessible to young people.

Howick School of Music

A very large music organisation in Howick. Fees are more than the government funded options but they offer a wide range of services. For more information visit their web site www.hsm.co.nz.
